Using local humor and heart-warming glimpses into the life of a diabetic, the lovable fictional character, Adel Sukkar, we created for the campaign is changing the public perception on the disease,while providing a powerful example of how Social Media can become a fun and innovative tool in connecting patients and physicians. Adel Sukkar is now Middle East’s most popular Diabetes Fighter, with a reach of 24.5 million and over 181,000 likes on Facebook.
OneHeart was a campaign, endorsed by Dubai Health Authority, Dubai Diabetes Center, Emirates Diabetes Society and the Emirates Cardiac Society, sets out to tackle cardiovascular disease, the world’s biggest single killer, which accounted for a quarter of all deaths in the UAE in 2012. The campaign launch included setting a new Guinness World Record of 8,675 blood sugar checks within an 8-hour period in Dubai Mall,UAE. The initiative helped to educate UAE residents about heart related illnesses and the common risk factors
In recognition of the increasing health problems of Diabetes, Dubai health Authority earlier this summer has set the Diabetes Combat and Control Committee(DCCC). The DCCC working with the various departments of the DHA has this year set a program which will seriously tackle the growing prevalence of Diabetes in the UAE .
